WHN Solicitors scoops Legal 500 expert John for senior role

A solicitor singled out as ‘brilliant’ in the UK’s ‘legal bible’ has joined North West law firm WHN Solicitors as part of the firm’s ambitious growth strategy.

Legal expert John Colvin was praised in the Legal 500 UK 2019 as a ‘brilliant’ commercial litigator and a ‘highly regarded’ banking litigation specialist.

Based at the firm’s Bury office as a senior associate solicitor, John joins WHN’s seven-strong dispute resolution team. He will play a pivotal role in driving further business growth in niche legal areas across the region.

Aged 48, John lives in Leigh, Greater Manchester, and has worked in the North West – including partner roles at Liverpool and Manchester firms – since qualifying as a solicitor 24 years ago.

John joins WHN from Kennedys (formerly Berg Legal), where he was a partner for five years prior to the firm’s merger with Kennedys in 2017. Previously, he was a senior in-house solicitor at Speedy Hire PLC and a senior solicitor at law firm DWF.

John’s new role at WHN will see him handling complex commercial dispute resolution work including business-to-business, shareholder, and construction disputes. In addition, he will deal with professional negligence claims, financial services disputes and banking litigation.

He will contribute to the growth of WHN’s fast-expanding dispute resolution team, drawing on his experience in commercial litigation, as well as private client litigation involving wills and trust disputes, together with claims for failed investment and tax schemes.

John is also well-placed to develop financial services and banking litigation work, which is an emerging service at WHN. As a partner at Berg, he gained significant experience in this niche sector, which included claims for the mis-selling of complex financial instruments such as derivatives and financial exchange products.

On top of this, John will develop the firm’s mediation business, based on an impressive track record of conducting numerous successful mediations, with particular expertise in wills, trust and shareholder disputes. In this role, he is an accredited mediator with ADR Group, helping both businesses and individuals avoid the often costly, time consuming and emotionally stressful process of court proceedings.

Commenting on his appointment, John said: “I am tremendously excited to be joining the WHN team in a role that will enable me to use my knowledge and experience in legal practice as well as helping to drive the ongoing expansion of the business.”

Michael Shroot, the firm’s CEO and head of commercial dispute resolution, added: “We are thrilled to welcome John on board as he is a seasoned and gifted lawyer with a skillset that will be a great asset in growing our business in niche areas, as well as more broadly. He is well-respected throughout the regional business and legal communities and I am certain he will prosper as a leading member of our team.”

John took a law degree at Manchester University before passing his Law Society finals at the College of Law in Chester. He qualified as a solicitor in 1995 and later obtained a diploma in commercial litigation practice at Manchester Metropolitan University.
