Conlon Construction wins Blackpool Academy brief

Preston-based Conlon Construction has been appointed to lead a multi-million pound design and build project at Armfield Academy in Blackpool.

Armfield Academy 2The scheme is named after Jimmy Armfield, who has made a significant contribution to the community of Blackpool. It was awarded as part of the Education Funding Agency (EFA) Regional Contractors Framework and will see the contractor refurbish existing accommodation and construct new buildings on the site of the former independent school on Lytham Road.

Conlon is working closely with Chester-based Lovelock Mitchell Architects to develop plans for a space that delivers an inspiring study experience for pupils.

The school, set to be run by Fylde Coast Academy Trust (FCAT), will accommodate 1,180 two to 16 year olds upon completion. The phased programme of works begins autumn 2017 with the first student intake in September 2018 and overall completion due in spring 2019.

Darren Lee, commercial director at Conlon Construction, said: “Having delivered projects through the EFA for several years now, we have built up extensive experience in the education sector.

“This scheme is all the more exciting for me as I live just around the corner from the development and know that the new school will be of great significance to the local community and something everyone in the area can be proud of. We want to do our best for the families in Blackpool as the demand for school places is expected to rise.”

Tony Nicholson, CEO at FCAT, added: “Sponsored by Hodgson Academy and Blackpool Sixth Form College, we already successfully run seven schools in the area and suitable accommodation will be vital in enabling us to provide the same quality offer for parents and students in the south of Blackpool. We’re thrilled to be working with Conlon Construction as the team is renowned for delivering great education projects across the North West.”
